Why is Loose Tea better than Tea Bags
Do you enjoy drinking a nice hot cup of tea? Or maybe iced tea is more your style. When you drink your tea do you find it to be bitter? Astringent? or flavorless? Are you constantly adding sweeteners and lemons to mask the taste of your tea? Chances are if you do suffer from bitter, bland tea, you are brewing it with a paper tea bag, bought from a name brand manufacturer who takes all of the dust and smaller pieces that cannot be used for loose leaf teas and sells them in tea bags. Loose leaf teas are made from the whole leaves, hand selected buds, and large pieces of material, bringing you the best part of the plant without all the byproducts.
While tea bags are generally cheaper, more convenient and quicker to brew, the flavor and quality will always be less than that of even regular quality loose leaf tea. Generally loose leaf teas keep their flavor longer, as there is less surface area for the leaves to be oxidized. If you choose to drink green tea, oxidation is very harmful to green teas as they have minimal oxidation. Another reason loose leaf tea is superior, is consistency, with tea bags it is often a blend of teas, which can be hard to recreate, while loose leaf teas are usually more pure. Much like grapes for wine making, growing conditions and time of year can greatly impact the flavor of a tea, these subtle changes cannot be detected in the lower quality tea bags.
When brewing loose leaf teas you do need a teapot, or some other means to strain the solids out. You can reuse most loose leaf teas several times depending on the quality, high quality teas maybe steeped up to seven times to maximize their output, with each steeping resulting in different flavors. Don’t like the idea of putting loose leaves directly in a tea pot? Don’t own a teapot? You can purchase loose leaf tea holders which are made of different materials which do not impart off flavors like the traditional paper bags do. These bags allow the leaves to full expand unlike regular teabags, bringing more flavor to the cup.
If you have never had loose leaf tea, you really are missing out, this is the absolute best way to brew tea of any variety. Try it out, you might just find that you don’t need that sugar or lemons any more! (Although they are still quite lovely depending on the type of tea). Loose leaf tea is only slightly more expensive, but you can brew it multiple times, and run less of a risk of making a bitter, astringent brew.
